Six years ago, the TIP programme was designed to increase the effectiveness of infrastructure investment. Now, it must accelerate its impact to morph into a way of working that is ingrained in every project from day one.
The infrastructure sector has reached a tipping point—the need for change to boost productivity and improve investment outcomes is no longer seen as a luxury but is now recognised as fundamental to the sector’s survival.
The clear message from the fourth TIP Live summit, hosted by the Infrastructure and Projects Authority in Manchester this February, was one of action. No longer can this programme be for a select enlightened few. Six years from its launch, TIP must become business as usual across every part of the design, delivery, and operational supply chain.
TIP must become ingrained as standard practice, rendering the name obsolete as the focus shifts to aligning infrastructure investment with citizen needs and maximising the value generated from this commitment of precious, hard-won public and private funding.
This practice will see value-led, data-driven project delivery become the norm, with productivity prompting a deeper examination of concepts such as industrialisation. The sector will move beyond traditional factory-based construction and towards platform design and new methods, such as panelised construction, to reduce environmental impact and improve efficiency.
